Student Employment: Workplace Expectations

Payment for Hours Worked

  • Student workers may not exceed the approved hours in a workweek as stated in the Student Employment Manual
  • Student workers must adhere to their assigned work schedule. Any schedule deviation must be reviewed and approved by your supervisor in advance.
  • Student workers must accurately report all hours worked, as well as all meal and break periods.
  • Student workers are not permitted to perform work off-the-clock.
  • If there is any need to work hours beyond your established schedule, those additional hours must be reviewed and approved by your supervisor in advance of the additional hours being worked.
  • At the end of each workweek, the student worker and supervisor must review the weekly timecard to certify that the time recorded is accurate.
  • Weekly time records must be submitted in accordance with the department deadline and supervisor’s instructions. Failure to do so may result in incorrect pay.
  • All errors in pay must be reported immediately to your supervisor
  • If a pay error is unable to be resolved through the supervisor, it should be reported to the department HR liaison and/or department administrator.

Respectful and safe environment

  • All individuals are expected to treat each other in a respectful, safe and non-discriminatory manner. This applies equally to student workers, their supervisors, coworkers and customers.
  • Note: If at any time you fear for your safety or are in a life-threatening situation, please immediately contact the Pitt Police at 412-624-2121 or 911.
