About Dr. Sharon P. Smith

Dr. Sharon P. Smith is the President of the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg and has served in this role since 2007.  Dr. Smith is the fourth president of Pitt-Greensburg and the first woman president. She is currently Chair of Excela Health and serves on the boards of the Economic Growth Connection, Smart Growth, Westmoreland Cultural Trust, and Westmoreland Heritage.

Prior to joining Pitt-Greensburg, Dr. Smith served as Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs for National University and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs for the National University System in La Jolla, California from December, 2005 until 2007.  

Dr. Smith was named dean of Fordham’s College of Business Administration (now the Gabelli School) in August 1990.  At that time, she was one of only 25 women deans in over 1,200 schools of business and the first woman named dean of a Jesuit business school.  She was a Professor in the Management Systems area.  In 2001, she was also named dean of the Graduate School of Business Administration and of the Business Faculty.  She has served as President of the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities Business Deans, of the Middle Atlantic Association of Colleges of Business Administration, and of the NASDAQ Stock Market Educational Foundation, Inc.  She has also served on the boards of the NASD (now FINRA), of the Security Traders Association (STA), and of the FINRA Investor Education Foundation, was chair of the NASD Dispute Resolution Board, and was a trustee of St. Barnabas Hospital.  During her sabbatical as a Visiting Fellow in the ILR School at Cornell University during 2005-06, she co-authored with Dr. Everette E. Dennis, Felix E. Larkin Chair in Communications and Media Management, Finding the Best Business School for You.  She is the author of numerous articles, of two other books:  Equal Pay in the Public Sector:  Fact or Fantasy and Faculty Retirement in the Arts and Sciences (co-authored with the late Albert Rees).  Prior to becoming Dean, she was a visiting senior research economist at Princeton University and Associate Director of the Project on Faculty Retirement. 

Dr. Smith was a District Manager for AT&T in Economic Analysis, in Labor Relations, and in Corporate Strategy and Development.  Previously, she was a senior economist with the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.  Dr. Smith is a summa cum laude graduate of Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, where she also earned her M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in economics.
